The Dead Sea it called the Dead Sea because no animals or plants can live there.  It is known for the saltiest water on Earth (nearly six times saltier than the ocean).

The Dead Sea's location is about an hour out of Jerusalem, and has the lowest point on earth, at 400 meters below sea level.

The Dead Sea has a higher concentration of salts and minerals (about 9 times the normal amount) with a smaller part of regular salt (sodium chloride) than other salt waters. Most of the salt in it is mineral salt, not the regular sodium chloride you put on your food.

The salt from the Dead Sea consists of sodium chloride, magnesium, potassium and calcium chlorides and a very high concentration of bromides (A heavy, volatile(evaporating regularly at normal temperatures), corrosive, reddish-brown, nonmetallic liquid element), having a highly irritating vapor .  The salts are composed of natural hygroscopic (readily absorbing) minerals found in the Dead Sea.

Because of this, the water in the Dead Sea is deadly to living things. Fish accidentally swimming into the waters from one of the several freshwater streams that feed the Sea are killed instantly, their bodies quickly coated with a preserving layer of salt crystals and then tossed onto shore by the wind and waves.
